@chris__martin That's a pretty cool idea, let's the game makers ensure the OS environment is pristine just for their game too.

Just finished reading Programming as Theory Building by Peter Naur. It's a good read, putting into some high falutin' words thoughts I've also had as a programmer.
A point struck me as particularly interesting though. An argument that program modification is, long term, more costly than a rewrite to create a program that encompasses the real world changes that demanded modification. At first, I thought, of course a programmer would argue a rewrite is better, that's just cliche. But I got to thinking of a shop I was employed at briefly. Part of the onboarding was an explanation that the cost of program maintenance is potentially exponential, especially if the foundation of the program isn't solid. If that's true, it follows at some point in a program's lifespan, a rewrite is inevitably going to be less costly.
I guess the cliche is a cliche for a reason.
80% of the conversation in the Matrix rooms I'm in are explaining to newcomers that their question isn't appropriate for the room.
Why are young twenty somethings constantly approaching me on Grindr? I'm getting tired of explaining that I'm too old for them.

@jbz vlang? That's a name I haven't heard in a long time.

Hot damn, #Signal is testing registering for new accounts without a phone number. Small one time fee to do so to prevent spam, but what a change.

huh, this is a really useful take on accounting for me
@jaranta https://github.com/phiresky/ripgrep-all looks like your answer
@hardy Elixir has been my favorite for a long time now, I'm glad it's obtained another alchemist! The hardest part for me was getting into the pattern matching mindset, and I'm still perfecting the skill. I hope you continue to enjoy it!
@kayserifserif Maybe an obvious suggestion, but you could create an account on the flagship instance, I think Eugene hasn't defederated.
Apparently it's that time when I periodically review and update tooling. Friendship over with Tree Style Tabs, Sidebery is my new best friend.
@dch I feel like DO giving $50/mo to Gnome is like tipping a waiter a quarter. It's somehow worse than giving nothing.
@kayserifserif Assuming you're not on a server that has defederated from Threads, there are clients that can pull in the public timeline of other servers. Phanpy specifically can be set up that way. I just tried it but I think fluffy.tech has defederated so all I got was an error.
@uhoreg I didn't have a strong reason, tbh, but I have a couple. Mise handles overall system setup and maintenance, from dotfiles to tools to languages to random scripts you want to run, so it's just generally more versatile than asdf.
And on the mise site, they make the security argument; asdf plugins are third-party, so you're not just trusting asdf, you're trusting whoever wrote and contributed to the plugins.
I will say the learning curve for mise is higher, at least if you want to set up things beyond language and tools. But migrating is easy, since mise reads from .tool-versions files.

Oh yeah, friendship over with asdf too
